Covid-19 Current Application:
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) from New York City announced today, 5/20/2020, that they have started using Ultraviolet light (UV-C) to kill Covid-19 on buses and trains and at stations.
UV-C, which is one of the three types of light on the UV spectrum, is proven to eliminate Covid-19 and is most potent against viruses and bacteria.
"... The Launch of this UV-C pilot represents a promising next step in our ongoing efforts to identify technologies that can keep our customers and employees as safe as possible." said MTA Chairman and CEO Patrick Foye in the interview with CNN.
The MTA also noted that the agency asked Dr. David Brenner, the director of the Center for Radiological Research at Columbia University, to examine the efficiency of the lamps. This week, Dr. Brenner reported his test showed UV-C light eliminated Covid-19.
The MTA is currently disinfecting 3,500 subway cars at least once daily, and some cars are cleaned as many as seven times daily at end-of-line stations.
UPDATED 6/12/2020 - According to Fox 5 New York, "The MTA unveiled the next stage of that pilot program on Friday, expanding the UV light technology from just one car to an entire 11-car train."
How does UV-C light kill germs?
Ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) is a disinfection method that uses short-wavelength ultraviolet (ultraviolet C or UV-C) light to kill or inactivate microorganisms by destroying nucleic acids and disrupting their DNA, leaving them unable to perform vital cellular functions.
On the electromagnetic spectrum, not all kinds of UV are effective in terms of germicidal irradiation. UV is divided into three types with reducing wavelengths and increasing energy. They are UVA, UVB and UVC.
For UV disinfection, only UVC (200-280nm) has high enough energy to effectively kill microorganisms.
Cleanture’s high quality and high-reliability deep ultraviolet (UV-C) LEDs emit light at 270 nm to 280 nm wavelengths that effectively destroy bacteria and germs by breaking down their DNA or RNA.
Cleanture portable UV-C sanitizer has been tested by STC and microbiological labs with FDA, CE, FCC, RoSH certificates to prove its effectiveness and safety.
It is equipped with both a child-safety lock and a safety function that turns off the device automatically when it is not held flat directly over the object to be disinfected (this is to prevent any accidental exposure on eyes and skins). Please use only as directed. Do not look directly into the light and do not use it to sterilize hands or other areas of the body.
